Daylit living room with white moulded wall panels, a white upright piano, a beige L-shaped sofa and linear ceiling lights

A soft-toned home in Powai.

A light three-bedroom apartment with a room shaped around each person: a blush bedroom with its own vanity, a powder-blue study shared by two, a calm guest room, and a living room built around a piano.

Our approach

One calm shell. A different mood in every room.

The shared rooms are quiet: cream walls, beige marble, pale timber and a single line of light drawn across the ceiling. The private rooms are where colour comes in, chosen by the person who sleeps there.

Instead of a heavy false ceiling with coves, we used slim linear light profiles set flush into the ceiling in an angled pattern. They light the room evenly, keep the ceiling height, and give the home its signature.

Warm brass details tie the rooms together, from the main door to the dining chair legs to the taps in the teal powder room.

01

Entrance

The main door is clad in walnut and dark veneer laid on the diagonal, separated by fine brass lines. Three brass lights wash the door from above, a tall brass pull runs most of its height, and a brass plaque carries the family name.

Living room

White moulded panels give the walls quiet detail behind the upright piano and the L-shaped sofa. A timber-framed armchair and a white coffee table keep the furniture light so daylight from the balcony reaches deep into the room.

The TV wall pairs a grey stone panel with slatted timber, a floating white console and a tall glass display unit. The open plan lets you see from the sofa to the dining table and the front door.

Dining

A walnut pedestal table on a brass ring base, cream upholstered chairs with brass-capped legs, and amber glass pendants on a slim track. A mirror panel on the wall doubles the light.

The kitchen sits behind black-framed sliding doors in fluted glass. Daylight passes through, cooking smells stay in, and a strip of white pebbles with a concealed light runs along the base.

Kitchen

A compact L-shaped kitchen with champagne-taupe base units, white wall cabinets and a pale quartz counter. The oven and microwave are built into a tall unit at eye level, and the dishwasher sits under the counter.

An angled black chimney gives more headroom over the hob, which matters for anyone who cooks every day.

Blush bedroom

Soft pink carries from the channel-tufted headboard to the door and the curtains, set against cream walls so it stays gentle. A brass pendant hangs beside the bed in place of a lamp.

Opposite, a low pink media unit with a glass top sits next to a dressing table with drawers and a backlit mirror, a proper place to get ready in the morning.

A study shared by two

A powder-blue room with two beds and one long desk with space for two chairs, two sets of drawers and two work areas. Floating shelves lit from below hold books and photographs, and the television is mounted between them.

Blue curtains and a pale blue desk keep the room cheerful without being childish, so it will still suit its owners in ten years.

Guest bedroom

A warm neutral room with a white panelled headboard, open white shelves on either side of the bed, and a framed print of Mount Fuji as its single piece of colour.

Bathrooms

The powder room is the one bold space in the home: deep teal marble on floor and walls, brushed gold fittings, a round backlit mirror and a ribbed vessel basin, lit by lines in the ceiling that echo the living room.

The other two bathrooms stay calm, one in blush onyx-look stone with recessed niches and brass towel rails, one in grey stone with a white vanity and a sculpted basin.

Ideas to borrow

A home where everyone has a corner.

Six ideas from this Powai home for families who want shared rooms to feel calm and private rooms to feel personal.

  1. 01Keep shared rooms neutral. Let colour live in the bedrooms, where the person using the room can choose it.
  2. 02Try linear lights instead of coves. Flush light profiles give even light without lowering the ceiling.
  3. 03Double what matters in a shared room. Two chairs, two task lights and two sets of sockets prevent most arguments.
  4. 04Separate the kitchen with fluted glass. It holds back smells and noise while letting light through.
  5. 05Make one bathroom bold. A dramatic powder room is a small area to spend on, and guests remember it.
  6. 06Fix appliances before drawing the kitchen. An oven tower and a dishwasher decide the layout, not the other way round.
